Ambience, entertainment, assistance: interior lighting for a fascinating driving experience
Gone are the days when a vehicle’s interior lighting served as a purely functional element. Modern lighting concepts have long been an integral part of a perceived high-quality and appealing ambience. Lighting has the ability to enhance comfort and well-being and create a feeling of safety. On a functional level, well designed illumination makes it easier for drivers to locate and utilize vehicle functions, particularly at dusk or nighttime.
The future will be individual
The progression toward autonomous driving will create an increase in the need and the desire for additional interior lighting applications. The car is becoming a personal living and working space – the focus is on increasing comfort, individualization and entertainment. In the future, light will also take on more and more safety functions.
Intelligent, connected and individually controllable interior lighting is extending the range of applications. For example, ambient lighting can adapt to the mood or activity in the car as passengers listen to music or watch a movie. In dangerous situations, light can be used to project warnings into the cockpit to enhance safety in situations where the driver’s perception is limited. In designing our products, we place particular emphasis on compact dimensions, high system efficiency and optimum connectivity.
Ambience: personalization and emotion
A personalized driving experience has passenger well-being as its focus. Soft ambient lighting, for example, allows drivers to choose colors for their interior lighting. Depending on the mood, different modes can be selected from “Relaxation” to “Action/Sport”. This individualization goes far beyond the predominantly functional usage and adds an emotional component. With further development of autonomous driving, in particular, the interior of a vehicle is becoming more like a home on four wheels – a place of well-being, characterized by color schemes that can evoke and reinforce moods.
Entertainment: interaction and dynamics
Interaction with the vehicle begins as soon as the driver approaches. Sensors detect the driver and project a personalized lighting design or message by way of a greeting. Dynamic interior lighting invites the driver to enter the vehicle and signals when it is ready to be driven. Various functional elements are adjusted at the start of the journey based on the time of day and available natural light. Depending on whether the passenger wants to work, listen to music or enjoy a movie, the lighting scenarios change automatically. This enhanced functionality is born from the ever-increasing need for sanctuary, individualization and entertainment, especially on long journeys.
Assistance: safety and service
There are countless ways of using intelligent interior lighting to provide drivers with meaningful support. For example, if the sensors detect driver fatigue or a hazardous situation on the road, the colours in the vehicle can be changed automatically to alert the driver. In- car projections also provide a way of showing relevant information during the journey without the need for separate display.

The overhead light console has matrix LED spots for a pleasant reading light which can be adjusted in terms of intensity and white tone.
Welcome and entertainment scenarios across the full RGB color palette
The static or semi-dynamic projector in the module can project individual motifs on various surfaces to convey information or produce patterns or animations. Animations integrated in the module are matched to the design of the decorative surface and can be adapted to different driving situations or vehicle interactions. The light structures in the decor are invisible and only light up when, for example, an incoming call is received – always in keeping with the ambient lighting.
Seamless user interface
The console has a fully integrated, capacitive touch sensor system that replaces conventional buttons. The high transparency of the touch sensor system, which lies directly above the matrix luminaire so its light shines through it, enables the intuitive activation. Thanks to its ease of integration, the overhead light console can be easily extended with additional functions such as haptic feedback via a piezo actuator, proof control and a handsfree function for more complex applications.
Sustainability follows cost-effectiveness
The entire decor unit is produced using an in-mold decoration process, which is not only more economical but also more sustainable than conventional production methods. This is achieved by combining various steps into a one-shot process, leading to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. Neither the ultra-thin touch sensors, which replace the switches and buttons, nor the decorative layers have any negative influence on the recyclability of the unit.
